Rostov Veliky

Located on the shores of Lake Nero, Rostov Veliky is one of the oldest towns in Russia, dating back to 862 AD. The town has a long history of rebellion, and many of its inhabitants (including women who dressed in men’s clothing) went on to fight other principalities and invading armies. The city played a critical role in Russian history, having been a major site of siege and revolt against the Mongols in the 13th and 14th centuries, and the birthplace of some of the most influential leaders of the early Russian state.
